Schools as Base Camps

This idea, which came from Valerie Hannon (The Innovation Unit, UK) resonateed with me. In her explanation of the importance of engaging students through innovative and relevant pedagogy Valerie described the 4 principles underpinning effective journey planning

1. Inquiry based learning
2. Extending learning relationships (mentors, coaches and outside experts)
3. Establishing the ‘learning commons’ – everyone is there to learn
4. School as ‘base camp’ – not the destination but the preparation zone.
